Mazda
MX-5 ND by BBR
One
of the most recognized MX-5 tuning specialists, BBR has released the first
tuning solutions for the latest ND generation of the Mazda Miata.
The
new tuning packs are designed for both the entry-level 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre versions,
offering full MOT emission test compliance in the UK, retaining all the
electronic fail-safes of the factory and are completely reversible, in case you
want to return your car back to its original status.
BBR
has developed the ‘Super 160’ upgrade for the entry-level Mazda MX-5 which adds
20 hp and 14 lb-ft of torque to the 1.5-litre engine’s output, bringing the total
up to a maximum of 158 hp at 7450 rpm. The power gain comes from BBR’s own
Starchip ECU software upgrade while the rev limiter now sits at 7700 rpm.
The
company has also introduced two different upgrades for the 2.0-litre models,
the ‘Super 175+’ and the ‘Super 190’. Just like the ‘Super 160’ pack, the
‘Super 175+’ upgrade uses BBR’s Starchip ECU software upgrade to increase the
available power, adding 17 hp and 10 lb-ft of torque to the engine’s power. The
total output now sits at a maximum of 177 hp at 6800 rpm, with similar benefits
to the torque curve, transforming the “driveability all the way from tickover
right up to the raised 7100 rpm rev limiter”. Both the ‘Super 160’ and the
‘Super 175+’ are available now for the corresponding version of the Mazda MX-5
ND for the price of £495, including installation and before/after dyno testing
at the company’s premises.
As
for the ‘Super 190’ upgrade, BBR’s top solution for the moment, this consists
of a new cold air intake system and a new exhaust system, from the manifold to
the twin tailpipes, measuring 2.5 inches in diameter for the centre section and
2.75 inches for the tailpipes and the company’s Starchip ECU software upgrade.
The
kit adds 30 hp and 24 lb-ft of torque, bringing the total up to 190 hp at 6700 rpm
and 176 lb-ft of torque at 3550 rpm, 1400 lower than the stock engine. The ‘Super
190’ upgrade is priced at £ 1995 fitted, including before/after dyno tests
.
BBR
has also developed their own lowering springs for the suspension of stock
models, combining a 30 mm drop in the ride height, taking away the excessive
body roll of the standard car without ruining the ride comfort. BBR offers them
for £ 495, including installation and a full laser geometry alignment session. A
replacement set of performance front brake pads and a full range of lightweight
alloy wheels and tyre packages are also available now for order.
