2016 MINI John Cooper Works convertible
MINI has revealed the
performance-oriented John Cooper Works version of its redesigned convertible,
and announced pricing for the rest of the convertible lineup.
The base MINI Cooper convertible will
run US$ 26,800, the Cooper S will cost US$ 30,450, and the John Cooper Works model
will be priced at US$ 36,450. The starting price is US$ 250 above the outgoing model.
The new MINI John Cooper Works
convertible is the most powerful convertible the brand has ever built, thanks to
a BMW-sourced 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 228
horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. MINI says the JCW model will
accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds with the six-speed automatic
transmission and 6.1 seconds with the six-speed manual. In addition to the engine, the JCW gets
a sports exhaust system, unique suspension tuning, and aerodynamic
improvements. All MINI convertibles will come with a power soft top with a
glass rear window.
The MINI Cooper convertible goes on sale
in March, with the JCW model arriving in April. A configurator is now available
on miniusa.com for those looking to build or pre-order their cars.
MINI has also released information on
the convertible's standard and optional equipment. Standard features will
include an “Always Open Timer,” which allows owners to calculate the number of
hours they’ve driven with the top down. A drive mode selector with three modes
(Green, Mid, and Sport), will come on all models. The MINI Connected
infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touchscreen will also be standard. It will
feature a 6.5-inch touchscreen, access to apps on owners' smartphones, voice
recognition, and Bluetooth connectivity. Other standard features will include an
integrated rollover protection system, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and
gearshift lever, dual-zone automatic climate control, rain-sensing windshield
wipers, keyless ignition, 12-color ambient interior lighting, 60/40
split-folding rear seats, automatic headlights, and Carbon Black leatherette
upholstery.
Eleven exterior colors will be offered,
as will several premium seating options, including the new Malt Brown leather
with diamond-stitching.
Optional features will include a
convertible top with the Union Jack design, as well as Fiber Alloy (with
aluminum), Off-White, and Dark Cottonwood matte-finish interior trim.
A full lineup of option packages will be
available. The Premium Package will include keyless access and starting, a
410-watt harman/kardon sound system, heated front seats, satellite radio with a
one-year subscription, a folding wind deflector, auto-dimming rearview and
driver's side mirrors, and power-folding exterior mirrors.
A Sport Package for the Cooper will come
with 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, LED taillights, sport seats with
leatherette upholstery, and adjustable dampers. The Sport Package for the
Cooper S will get the same features, plus 17-inch alloy wheels and LED fog
lights.
An available Technology Package will get
an 8.8-inch touchscreen, navigation with real-time traffic information, MINI
Connected XL with support for the Journey Mate companion app, a rain warning
app, a rearview camera, and rear parking assist. The Journey Mate app allows
you to plan your route, reports the weather, points out gas stations when
needed, and provides parking recommendations.
