New Jaguar I-Type 1 Electric Racer
It may be a little while longer before
Jaguar introduces its first all-electric road car, but it has paved the way
with the reveal of its first electric racing car.
Dubbed the I-Type 1, the new Jaguar single-seater is set to compete in the FIA
Formula E Championship this season. The vehicle has already undergone 21 days
of testing, and is now ready for its race debut in the season-opener Hong Kong
ePrix, scheduled for October 9.
Along with the electric racing car
itself, Jaguar Racing has also revealed its lineup of drivers and sponsors for
the season ahead. Taking the wheel will be Adam Carroll, joined
by Mitch Evans, with Ho-Pin Tung serving as the team's reserve driver, while
Panasonic and Lear will be its primary sponsors.
33-year-old Carroll from Northern
Ireland won the 2009 A1GP championship, has won races in Formula 3 and GP2, and
has been leading the development of the car you see here. 22-year-old Evans
from New Zealand is a former GP3 champion and finished second in the LMP2 at Le
Mans last year. And 33-year-old Chinese driver Tung has competed in an array of
single-seater racing series and contested three Formula E races in its first
season.
We'll be watching to see if Jaguar can
unseat the Renault e.dams team to take the championship in its first season in
formula racing since it sold its F1 team to Red Bull.
