This is the BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition. The super-frugal diesel variant, which will go on sale beginning in March, gets a number of tweaks to boost engine, transmission and aerodynamic efficiency.

Under the bonnet sits the now ubiquitous B47 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel, but with anti-friction bearings on top of which the turbocharger is mounted, plus high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), a map-controlled oil pump and a revised common-rail direct injection system – the latter features solenoid injectors that ensure precise fuel dosing at up to 2,000 bar of pressure.

Combined with the standard-fit ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, the 520d ED is capable of delivering fuel consumption figures of between 4.3 and 3.9 litres per 100 kilometres and CO2 emissions of between 114 and 102 grams per kilometre. Even with the increased efficiency, the engine still musters 190 hp and 400 Nm of torque between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm, enabling a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 7.5 seconds.

Also fitted is BMW BluePerformance technology, supplementing the particular filter, oxidation catalyst and nitrogen oxide storage catalyst with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system with AdBlue injection to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions still further.
