A prototype of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz
A-Class has been spotted by our spy photographers again, and this time, we are
given an even more undisguised view of the model’s all-new interior.
We
begin with the A-Class’ dashboard, which continues to feature the triple
air-con vents. However, the items appear to have been positioned lower down
from before, and now follow the design seen in the C238 E-Class Coupe.
The reason for the former is likely to accommodate
the compact car’s new widescreen cockpit (a la W213 E-Class), which seems
smaller than in another test mule (likely for lower variants). Given the dual
duties the widescreen cockpit will perform, the free-standing display from the
current W176 is naturally omitted here.
Also seen here is the steering wheel design in a
similar guise to that in the new W222 S-Class, which differs from an earlier
prototype sighted with a W213 E-Class-esque unit. Other cues taken from its
larger sibling include the switchgear for the car’s functions (air-conditioning
controls and quick access buttons), which appears to be arranged in two tiers
to allow for additional stowage space beneath them, as well as providing the
cabin with a more airy feel. However, as this is a pre-production model, it
remains to be seen if this look will make it to the A-Class’ final design.
As for the exterior, there doesn’t appear to be a
whole lot new from what we’ve seen before. The sharper exterior styling is
highlighted by slimmer headlights at the front, a longer bonnet and new
taillights. The new A-Class will reportedly ride on Mercedes-Benz’s
next-generation front wheel drive platform called Modular Front Architecture 2
(MFA2).
The platform will also be used to underpin
successors to the B-Class, CLA, CLA Shooting Brake and GLA. Other possible
all-new models include the A-Class sedan (previewed by the Concept A Sedan),
GLB SUV and a long wheelbase version of the A-Class sedan.
