Volkswagen have yet to decide whether they will
continue to build the Beetle beyond the current generation, but in the
meanwhile it is capitalizing on the legend of the original by launching a
special edition of the Up!, inspired by the 1982 Bug.
Named the Volkswagen Up! Special Bug, it's already
on sale in Germany, where prices start from € 13,625 (US$ 15,312) for the
model finished in black pearl and equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels. There is
also a version that sports a savanna gold exterior and black 'polygon' wheels
and can be had from € 13,775 (US$ 15,480).
Both carry a 'Special' lettering in the stripes
fitted to the lower side of the doors, and, for an additional contrast, their
side mirror casings can be finished in black or reflex silver. Inside, there
are savanna gold seat covers and dashpad, along with standard aluminum door
tread plates with the word 'Up!', black roof liner, and heated seats.
The 'Special Bug' range includes a natural-gas
powered variant, which is offered in combination with the black pearl trim
only. It starts from € 16,600 (US$ 18,655) and uses a 1.0-liter TGI engine mated to
a five-speed gearbox.
