BMW's electric vehicle lineup is currently limited
to the i3 but that could soon be changing. According to Germany's Handelsblatt,
BMW will take direct aim at the Tesla Model 3 by unveiling an electric version
of the 3-Series at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
Details are limited at this point but the report
indicates the model will have a range of 400 km. If that number is
accurate, the vehicle could eclipse the Model 3 which is slated to have a range
of at least 346 km.
It remains unclear if the car will be a concept or a
production model but it will likely be based on the next-generation 3-Series.
The new model is expected to be 6 cm longer than its predecessor
and about 88 lbs (40 kg) lighter thanks to its new CLAR underpinnings.
Besides the electric variant, BMW is reportedly
working on at least two different plug-in hybrids which could have an
electric-only range of up to 50 km. We can also expect an assortment
of familiar petrol and diesel options with three-, four-, and six-cylinders.
