BMWs don't come cheap. This one carries an asking price of US$ 745,000. The car in question is a 1980 BMW M1, which was not
only the first M car, but the only real supercar BMW ever made – even if it
only had a six-cylinder engine – thanks in no small part to development help
from Lamborghini and styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro.
BMW only made 453 of them, leaving those survivors
highly prized among collectors. With just 8,441 miles on the odometer and
presented in what looks like immaculate condition, this US example is sure to
catch an eye or two.
RM Sotheby's, for reference, sold one similar little
less than a year ago at Pebble Beach for US$ 577,500, and that had even fewer
miles on it. Another example with just 424 miles on the clock failed to meet
its reserve price, late in 2015, on the back of a ~US$ 900k valuation.
The US$ 745k asking price on this one seems a bit
ambitious, then. But even if someone pays it, it still won't be the most
expensive BMW on the market, as 507 roadsters from the late 1950s typically
sell for a million or two.
