Mahindra is vigorously testing the Mahindra S201. A
test mule was recently spotted in the outskirts of Chennai, courtesy Anything
On Wheels.
The Mahindra S201 sits on the SsangYong Tivoli’s
X100 platform. Mahindra will sell it in two versions – one with a sub-4 metre
body and the other with an elongated body that offers three rows of seating.
The test mule seen here is most likely the 5-seat version. The S201 will slot
above the Mahindra TUV300 as the more contemporary and premium option.
Reports suggest that the S201 will differ from the
SsangYong Tivoli in terms of appearance. Changes will be restricted mostly to
the front, where one of the changes may include a unique upper grille. The
interior will be largely carried over from the South Korean SUV. Mahindra will
offer the S201 with a 1.2-litre direct injection turbocharged petrol engine and
a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine. The petrol engine will produce around
140 hp and the diesel engine will develop as much as 125 hp.
The 5-seat Mahindra S201 will rival the Hyundai
Creta and Renault Captur in India. Its market launch will take place in
mid-2018.
