Porsche’s mid-engined sports car might have opted
for turbocharged four-pot powertrains but the same doesn’t apply for the
upcoming special editions, including the 2019 Boxster Spyder. The Boxster will sit at the top of the range as
the most harcore version yet, sporting a lighter tent top instead of the
power-operated soft-top along with a different engine cover.
The diet will continue on other areas too, with
Porsche to remove some of the soundproofing and use more exotic materials to
make the new Boxster Spyder lighter than the current GTS models.
Power will reportedly come from the high-revving
4.0-liter flat six engine featured in the phenomenal 911 GT3. However, the same
reports suggest that Porsche will detune the powerplant down from its 493 hp to
around 430 hp, which sounds like the right thing to do if the company wants to
retain the 911 GT3’s top dog status.
The new Boxster Spyder will also utilize more
advanced aero solutions which include the big rear diffuser you see fitted on
the pictured test car. And yes, there will be a six-speed manual gearbox, with
the dual-clutch PDK transmission a possible option.
The same powertrain will be also used on the Boxster
Spyder’s twin brother, the new Cayman GT4. Expect Porsche to reveal its new
hardcore mid-engine sports cars this summer.
