Borgward has unveiled the new BX6 and BXi7. Starting with the BX6, the
model is a compact crossover coupe which is designed to appeal to younger
customers thanks to its “personalized look and aerodynamic optimization.”
The
draws inspiration from the BMW X4 and it features a prominent grille that is
flanked by slender headlights and LED daytime running lights. Moving further
back, we can see plastic body cladding, a dual exhaust system and a coupe-like
design which isn’t very flattering.
The interior is another story as the model comes
nicely equipped with a sport steering wheel, leather seats and wood trim. Other
highlights include a 10-way power driver’s seat, a push button ignition and a
dual-zone automatic climate control system. Drivers will also find an
infotainment system with an eight-inch display.
Power is provided by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine
that produces 221 hp and 300 Nm of torque. It is
connected to a six-speed automatic transmission which is paired to a standard
all-wheel drive system which can detect slips and react within 0.12 seconds.
The company declined to say how fast the crossover is but they confirmed it
will consume 7.1 L/100km (33.1 mpg US / 39.7 mpg UK). The Borgward BX6 will be
launched in South America and the Middle East later this year. The crossover
will eventually make its way to Southeast Asia in early 2019.
The more interesting of the two models is the
electric BXi7. It features two electric motors that produce 238 hp and
390 Nm of torque. This setup enables the crossover to accelerate
from 0-100 km/h in 7.9 seconds before hitting a top speed of 195 km/h.
Borgward declined to mention the battery’s capacity
but lithium-ion battery pack enables the BXi7 to travel up to 375 km on a single charge. When the battery is depleted, a rapid charging
system can deliver an 80 percent charge in as little as 45 minutes.
Besides offering an impressive range, the battery
pack features an “intelligent thermal management system.” Borgward says this
will enable the battery to perform optimally even when the outside temperature
is between -30° C and 55° C.
