Ford is working on
a Mustang-inspired electric crossover, but fans looking for a more traditional
pony car experience can opt for Charge’s retro-inspired model.
Available as a
coupe or convertible, the car has classic looks as it features an officially
licensed shell from a 1960’s Mustang. While the styling is period correct,
there are a handful of touches which indicate this isn’t your typical Mustang.
The company was coy on specifics, but the car has been equipped with modern
lighting units, a revised grille and ten-spoke wheels that are backed up by a
high-performance braking system with gold calipers.
While the styling
is retro, the powertrain is anything but. Charge teamed up with Arrival to
create a high-tech powertrain which consists of a 64 kWh battery pack and an
undisclosed number of electric motors. This enables the car to produce 402 hp and 1,200 Nm of torque.
Thanks to the
electric powertrain, the Mustang will be able to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in less than 3.1 seconds and have a range of 200 km.
The company’s website also indicates there will be rear- and all-wheel drive
variants.
The modern technology
carries over to the cabin as Charge says buyers can expect a luxurious and
bespoke interior that features “state-of-the-art components and a personalized
digital interface.” The company didn’t elaborate, but an Instagram post shows
the Mustang will have a digital instrument cluster and a large infotainment
system. We can also see a leather-wrapped dashboard, bright pedals and a
retro-inspired steering wheel.
Production will be
limited to 499 units and pricing starts at US$ 260,145. The
first deliveries are slated to begin in September of 2019 and the company is
planning to host a number test drive events in places such as London, New York,
Los Angeles, Tokyo and Shanghai.
