The automotive industry hasn’t been without its
revival of long-dormant old marques these past several years. But now we’re
about to get another, and it’s preparing to roll out a new electric supercar. That marque is Hispano Suiza, a name
which once stood alongside the likes of Bugatti and Rolls-Royce among the most
elite automobile manufacturers in the world.
The Spanish company was originally founded (with a
hyphen in the name) way back at the turn of the previous century, and after a
tumultuous history, disappeared in 1968 – though its French aviation division
has continued operating under a string of parent companies.
Fast forward to the modern era when efforts began to
revive the marque in 2000 with the showing of the HS21 supercar at the Geneva
Motor Show, the K8 the following year, and the HS21-GTS the year after. None of those ever saw the light
of day, but we’re hoping this one could. This solitary teaser image previews a
new electric supercar that’s set to be unveiled at next year’s Geneva show, set
to be manufactured in Barcelona where the marque was first founded over a
century ago.
The initiate is spearheaded by one Miguel Suqué
Mateu, great-grandson of the founder, who now heads the reborn Hispano Suiza
Fábrica de Automóviles S.A. “Back in 1900, when Hispano Suiza started, it built
the first electric car in the world, but the prototype was never industrially
manufactured,” said Mateu. “Now, 119 years later, in March 2019, Hispano Suiza
has its first 100% electric car, offering great performance and manufactured in
Barcelona, the realization of my great grandfather’s dream.”
Unfortunately we don’t have much else to go on, but
we’re looking forward to seeing what the family has in store, and whether it
can make a go of it.
