The SEMA Show is winding down and Toyota is already
turning its attention to the Los Angeles Auto Show which kicks off later this
month. In a short tweet, the company confirmed its TRD family is growing and
suggested the next models wouldn’t be trucks. The tweet also included a teaser
image which appears to TRD versions of the Avalon and Camry.
The image isn’t very revealing, but it shows the
cars will be equipped with a new front splitter that features red accents. We
can also see lightweight alloy wheels and an upgraded braking system with red
calipers. Toyota is staying tight-lipped about details, but
the company confirmed the cars will be unveiled on November 28th at 2:05 PM
EST. A previous press release from the Los Angeles Auto Show suggests the
Avalon and Camry TRD will be special editions that will be joined by three
other new vehicles.
Little is known about the latter, but at least one
of them will be a hybrid. The unveiling of the Avalon and Camry TRD comes about
four months after Toyota introduced the 86 TRD. That particular model was
equipped with an aggressive body kit, tri-color stripes and a TRD exhaust
system with stainless steel tips. The special edition also had Brembo brakes,
SACHS dampers and exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot
Sport 4 summer tires.
The changes to the Avalon and Camry probably won’t
be as drastic and we can expect engine options to carryover. As a result, the
Avalon TRD should have a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 268 hp and 335 Nm of torque. The Camry, on the other hand, could have
a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with up to 206 hp or a 3.5-liter V6
developing 301 hp.
