Do you want Porsche to put the Cayman GT4 Rallye
Concept into production? Well, you just need to spread the word to the right
people, and only then you might see it being raced officially. Speaking to TopGear, Porsche’s Motorsport
chief, Frank-Steffen Walliser, revealed the automaker will put the rally car
concept into production on one condition: “We need to sell 100 to get the green
light”.
Even if Porsche achieves their goal of nabbing 100
orders for the rally car, it’s very likely that all of them will be raced by
private competitors. The German automaker has no intention of running its own
rally team, so they won’t return to events such as Dakar, much to the
disappointment of their motorsport fans.
The Cayman GT4 Rallye Concept proved its credentials
in August, when it was shown to spectators at the ADAC Rallye Deutschland. The
car made a great first impression, as “even the WRC’s top five drivers all
wanted to drive it”, added Walliser. “It’s pure rear-wheel drive and just the
sound of the car as it comes through the woods, it’s really loud.”
Based on the Cayman GT4 Clubsport, a track-focused
version of the Cayman GT4, the Rallye Concept comes with full underbody
protection, energy-absorbing foam element in the doors and auxiliary lights. The 385 PS produced by the 3.8-liter flat-six are directed to the rear axle via a
dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Naught to 100 km/h takes 4.4 seconds
in the street-legal model, so the rally-spec should be just as quick or faster.
