The third generation Seat Leon still looks good even
after 7 years in the market, but the Spanish automaker knows that, in order to
keep it on the competitive side of the compact segment, it needs a new one in
its lineup. And it’s getting one, with the new generation expected to debut later
this year, probably at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show next month.
Aside from a shift in styling and heavily reworked
interior, as revealed by previous spy shots, the 2020 Leon will be based on an
updated version of the MQB platform. It should still be offered with the usual
petrol and diesel engines, but electrification is starting to be a big thing
over at Seat, so it will also get mild-hybrid and even plug-in hybrid
powertrains.
Moreover, the Cupra Leon is rumored to be available
both as a 245 PS PHEV, with a zero-emission range of up to 50
km, and as a conventional ICE-powered model as well, with a 300 PS 2.0-liter TSI four.
Another important aspect will be the phasing out of
the three-door body style, as customers no longer favor three-door hatchbacks.
Instead, the new Leon will only be sold as a five-door hatchback and estate,
with the latter adding a bigger boot and redesigned rear end.
