Volkswagen used the Frankfurt Motor Show to tease
the ID.4, but the automaker was tight-lipped on specifics. However, The Drive has discovered
a video where VW’s sales boss, Jürgen Stackmann, confirms the upcoming
crossover is “much bigger” than the ID.3 and will be unveiled in February.
While Stackmann didn’t give a specific date, the
model could be unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show which kicks off on February
7th. That remains unconfirmed and it’s also possible the automaker could
introduce the crossover at a dedicated event similar to the one being planned
for the eighth-generation Golf.
Regardless of when and where the ID.4 debuts, the
model will be the production version of the ID Crozz concepts. It will be
heavily inspired by the ID.3 and ride on the same MEB platform.
Despite sharing the same architecture, the ID.4 will
likely come equipped with a dual motor 4Motion all-wheel drive system. Little
is known about it, but the ID Crozz II’s front motor produced 101 hp while the rear motor churned out 201 hp. This setup
gave the concept a combined output of 302 hp.
It remains unclear how faithful the production model
will be to the concept’s powertrain, but the rear motor is likely a given as
the ID.3 also has a rear electric motor that produces 201 hp.
That being said, the ID Crozz II concept had an 83 kWh lithium-ion battery pack
which is significantly larger than the 45-, 58- and 77 kWh units offered in the
ID.3. Of course, the ID.4 is bigger so it’s possible Volkswagen will use the
extra room to install a larger battery pack.
