The all-new VW Golf R has been spotted
completely undisguised while undergoing winter testing and it looks exactly as
you expected. This prototype of the range-topping performance model of the 2020
VW Golf Mk8 sports all the exterior elements typical to the Golf R.
Sportier bumpers with big air intakes at
the front and a massive diffuser at the rear flanked by quad round exhausts?
Check. Bigger roof spoiler, side skirts and blue-painted brake calipers on
massive brake discs (perforated at the front)?.
We don’t have photos of the interior but you can see the familiar
dual-display dashboard of the Golf Mk8 and the sports steering wheel. Expect
the package to be rounded out by sports seats (more aggressive bucket seats
should be optionally available), carbon fiber and aluminum trim inserts, as
well as plenty of Alcantara surfaces. As for the powertrain, a purportedly
leaked screenshot of an official VW video revealed that the all-new Golf R will
pack 333 PS from an updated 2.0-liter turbocharged
four-cylinder gasoline engine.
Mated to a DSG dual-clutch automatic
transmission and standard 4Motion AWD system, the VW Golf R should be even
quicker than its predecessor. Kitted with the
Performance Pack, the current Golf R does 0-100 km/h in 4.6
seconds and maxes out at 270 km/h. The all-new VW Golf R is expected
to debut in mid-2020, possibly at July’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.
