Maserati has announced their upcoming
sports car will be called the MC20. Shorthand for Maserati Corse 2020, the MC20
moniker recalls the company’s racing pedigree and that’s fitting as the car
will mark the brand’s return to motorsport.
Maserati is keeping details under wraps,
but said the MC20 is a “super sports car” which is a “natural evolution of the
highly successful MC12” which marked their return to racing in 2004. The
company noted the MC12 won 22 races and 14 championship titles over the course
of its career and they’re obviously hoping the MC20 will be able to replicate
that success. The MC20 will be unveiled in May and built at the company’s Viale
Ciro Menotti plant. It promises to usher in a new era for the brand as Maserati
has previously confirmed plans for an electric variant.
Little else is known about the car at this
point, but the company has previously released teaser photos showing what
appeared to be a modified Alfa Romeo 4C. At the time, Maserati said the vehicle
was a mule for testing an all-new powertrain that was “developed and built”
in-house. The company didn’t say much about it, but confirmed the powertrain
would spawn a new family of engines which will be exclusive to the brand.
While the mystery engine is expected to be
a turbocharged V8, the automaker has suggested the electric variant will have
three electric motors, all-wheel drive and 800V battery technology just like
the Porsche Taycan. Maserati has also said the EV will have a long range, quick
recharging times and “over 50% more power” than what we can assume is the
standard car.
