Ford is paying tribute to the to the original Cobra Jet that dominated the drag strips in the late 1960s with the new Mustang Cobra Jet. The factory drag racer with zero-emission propulsion is a prototype built by Ford Performance, with help from partners such as MLe Racecars, Watson Engineering, AEM EV and Cascadia.

An absolute beast at the drag strip, where it can run the quarter mile in the low 8 seconds, with an exit speed of over 274 km/h, the Mustang Cobra Jet boasts more than 1,400 horsepower and 1,491 Nm of instant torque.

Since this is a prototype, Ford hasn’t released any details surrounding the powertrain and batteries. However, it did state that the drag car will celebrate its world debut later this year at a drag racing event where it will demonstrate its skills against the clock and, who knows, many other fast machines.

Those who want to find out more about the exciting zero-emission Mustang project built for drag racing should watch Motor Trend’s ‘Hard Cell’ this Sunday (April 26).
