Toyota is getting ready for the SEMA show where it will present a truck camper based on the Tacoma TRD Sport. The one-off is inspired by the Toyota Chinook from the ’80s but will have modern features and off-road-focused design.
The project is under development in
Toyota’s headquarters in Plano, Texas. Team manager Marty Schwerter said that
the biggest challenge will be to source the right parts in order to fit in this
“micro house” since the space is quite limited.
Design-wise, the camper has rounded edges
and features retro-inspired graphics since Marty Schwerter didn’t want it to
look like “a refrigerator in the back of the truck”. As suggested by the
rendering, the Tacoma will be fitted with chunky all-terrain tires, lifted
suspension, and custom fenders, while the short rear overhang will allow for
decent off-road angles.
Early drawings for the interior show a
tubular frame above the chassis that sticks out several feet above the roof of
the truck. The camper will feature a double bed, a dining table with a couch, a
toilet, and a kitchenette with rear access. Overall, the “Tacozilla” seems
quite an interesting project and we really look forward to seeing the end
result at SEMA this year.
