Ferrari chief executive Benedetto Vigna has confirmed the automaker will launch a new Icona limited-run model later this month. Word about this new model first broke a few months ago with speculation that it would serve as the latest in a long line of one-off supercars produced through Ferrari’s Special Projects division. The Italian brand then started sending out invitations to its most valued customers in October, revealing that the vehicle would be shown to clients on November 15 and unveiled to the public on November 21.
According to Automotive News, Vigna spoke
about the vehicle during the company’s recent third-quarter results call with
investors and said that it will follow in the footsteps of the Monza SP1 and
SP2. As such, it will not be a one-off and will instead be built in limited
numbers. Ferrari had intended on debuting the new vehicle in 2022 but speaking
on the call, chief financial officer Antonio Picca Piccon said the launch was
moved forward due to “strong customer needs for a new Icona, which we felt the
responsibility to satisfy.” Picca Piccon added that Ferrari will start taking
deposits for the car in 2022.
Neither Vigna nor Picca Piccon revealed
any details about the new Icona model but recent rumors point towards it being
based on the carbon chassis of the LaFerrari Aperta, while its design will
allegedly take inspiration from the 330 P4 racing car of the 1960s. Spy shots
of a heavily-disguised prototype have revealed a rounded roofline, wing mirrors
on the front fenders, a large rear lip spoiler, and other retro-inspired
elements. The car is expected to feature the same 6.5-liter naturally aspirated
V12 as the 812 Competizione and will ditch the hybrid system of the LaFerrari
that it is based on.
