Mercedes-Benz is currently focused on expanding their EQ range of electric sedans and SUVs, however, they don’t forget more traditional models like the E-Class. A few months ago we saw a mysterious mule and now our spy photographers spotted a camouflaged prototype of the next-generation E-Class testing in public roads. Every inch of the bodywork is covered in camouflage wrap however we can see that the overall shape of the car is more aerodynamic compared to the current model but at the same time more traditional than the fully electric EQE.
Styling appears to be evolutionary, with a
familiar shape for the side windows. The grille appears to be larger than
before, with this specific variant not featuring the Panamericana-style found
on the new C-Class and in every single Mercedes-AMG model. Headlights are
slimmer and more aggressive, incorporating the latest tech, while the door
handles are flush with the body for less drag. Naturally, the rear end is
heavily inspired by the larger S-Class with very similar horizontally arranged
LED taillights.
We don’t have pictures of the interior but
the new E-Class will likely feature the new screen layout that is already used
on the C-Class and S-Class. This means it could feature a 12.3-inch digital
instrument cluster and a large touchscreen in portrait orientation on the
center console for the MBUX infotainment. While no official announcements have
been made yet, we expect the next E-Class to be available in both Sedan and
Estate bodystyles. As for the two-door Coupe and Convertible models, those will
be discontinued, with the rumored CLE coming in 2023 as an indirect replacement
for both.
The current W213 E-Class debuted in 2016
and received a facelift in 2020. This means that the new generation could be
launched sometime in 2023 or 2024. Given that 2030 will bring an ICE sales ban
in most major markets, the next E-Class will likely be the last one fitted with
an internal combustion engine. In order to comply with the strict regulations,
the new model is expected to rely on a heavily electrified powertrain mix
including plug-in hybrid variants with more range.
