Both Honda and Acura are working on two fully electric SUVs based on GM’s Ultium architecture as part of the partnership between the automakers. Honda has already teased their own model that will be called the Prologue, and Acura has just trademarked the ADX nameplate which could be used for its own EV.
The trademark for the ADX name was filed
by Honda in the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Following Acura’s
naming strategy, the ADX will most likely join the RDX and the MDX in the SUV
range. While the new name could be used by an ICE-powered SUV, like one based
on the new Honda HR-V, it is most likely that Acura will keep it for a fully
electric model that is expected soon.
The Acura EV will have distinct exterior
and interior styling, following the brand’s current design language. Under the
shell, it will use GM-sourced underpinnings and will be manufactured by General
Motors in Spring Hill, Tennessee, alongside the Cadillac Lyric. Thus, it will
likely share the 100 kWh battery with the latter and the rest of the
Ultium-based SUVs, including the upcoming Buick Electra.
Sales of both the Acura and Honda electric
SUVs are expected to start in 2024 MY for North America. Acura wants electric
vehicles to account for more than 50 percent of its total sales by 2030 and is
planning on bypassing hybrids for a rapid shift to EVs.
