Honda is celebrating the new year by giving us a peek at the 2023 HR-V. Set to debut later this year, the redesigned model promises to be a “sporty and versatile” crossover that is unique to North America. That’s immediately apparent from these teaser images as the US-spec model is completely different from the international variant that was introduced in 2021. Honda is staying tight-lipped, but the teasers give us an unmistakable Ford Escape vibe as both models feature an oval grille and sweptback headlights. However, the HR-V has a more aggressive front bumper with black surrounds that echo those found on the Civic.
Moving further back, we can see a sculpted
hood, a prominent shoulder line, and curvaceous bodywork. The model also
eschews the hidden rear door handles found on the international variant for a
more conventional setup. Rounding out the highlights are an angular rear window
and stylish taillights with a flowing element. They’re joined by a two-tone
bumper, which lacks an exhaust cut out.
Specifications remain unconfirmed, but the
outgoing model has a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 141 hp and 172 Nm of torque. It will presumably be replaced
by the Civic’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which produces a more substantial 158
hp and 187 Nm of torque.
Regardless of what’s under the hood, the
HR-V is an important model for Honda as the company sold 137,090 units in the
United States last year. That makes the
HR-V their third best-selling truck/utility and it also means the aging
crossover outsold competitors such as the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Subaru
Crosstrek.
