The production version of the Smart Concept #1 has been spied testing in China covered in camouflage and body cladding. Smart introduced the Concept #1 at the Munich Motor Show in September last year, promising that the eventual production model would look very similar to the show car. It is the first ground-up EV from Smart since Daimler and Geely announced a tie-up to keep the Smart brand alive.
These spy shots show that the electric SUV
has a near-identical shape to the concept, with very short front and rear
overhangs. We are not provided with a clear look of the front end but the LED
headlights of the concept appear to have been carried through to the production
model.
Elsewhere, the new Smart SUV can be seen
with a pronounced roofline with angular side windows. Body cladding hides key
design elements on the doors, including the handles, while aerodynamic discs
have also been placed over the wheels. The prototype’s rear end looks just like
the Concept #1 too and sports LED taillights with a pronounced LED light bar.
The electric SUV will probably have the
same dimensions as the concept. The latter is 4,290 mm long,
1,910 mm wide, and 1,698 mm tall, making it
slightly shorter but wider and taller than the Mercedes-Benz EQA. Details about
the vehicle’s electric powertrain remain under wraps but the car is expected to
feature a number of advanced driver assistance systems. It is tipped to hit the
Chinese and European markets in 2023.
