The 2022 Mazda CX-60 has been spied ahead of its debut on March 8th. Caught wearing revealing camouflage, the CX-60 features a prominent grille which flows into slender daytime running lights that also function as turn signals. Elsewhere, there’s small headlights and triangular intakes. Moving further back, we can see streamlined bodywork and a pronounced shoulder line. They’re joined by muscular wheel arches, a gently sloping roof, and an upward sweeping beltline. We can also see a familiar greenhouse and sizable badges on the front fenders.
Out back, the curvaceous rear end sports
slender taillights and a small spoiler. Designers also gave the model an
angular rear window and a relatively small four-tailpipe exhaust system. While
it’s unusual to see a Mazda with a four-tailpipe exhaust system, there’s a good
reason for it as the CX-60 will be offered with a high-performance plug-in
hybrid powertrain. It consists of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a
“performance-enhancing electric motor,” which allows for a combined output in
excess of 296 hp. Mazda has said the powertrain will offer
“smooth, efficient and powerful acceleration giving the driver greater
confidence and driving enjoyment in the widest possible range of driving
scenarios.”
Besides the plug-in hybrid powertrain, the
CX-60 will be offered with straight-six Skyactiv-X petrol and Skyactiv-D diesel
engines. Both will apparently have a 48V mild hybrid system for “excellent
environmental performance.” We’ll learn more about the CX-60 next month, but
it’s targeted at European consumers and won’t replace the CX-5 as that
crossover “remains one of the core models driving Mazda’s business globally.”
