If your daily commute could involve getting attacked by assailants with assault rifles and hand grenades, you can breathe a sigh of relief as INKAS has unveiled an armored version of the latest Mercedes S-Class. Designed to combine luxury with impressive levels of protection, the S580 4MATIC flies under the radar thanks to discreet armoring that includes multi-layer bullet resistant glass as well as full “perimeter protection of the passenger compartment.” The upgrades don’t end there as the model has been equipped with a reinforced suspension and protection for key vehicle components. The car also rides on run-flat tires as the best way to survive an attack is to escape.
That’s just the starting point as the
vehicle can be equipped with additional safety features including fire
suppression systems, an onboard oxygen supply to fend off chemical attacks, and
a “thermal night vision system which increases visibility by four times at
night and ensures the vehicle can operate through dark, dust, smoke and fog.”
The model can also be outfitted with strobe lights, a siren, and a public
address system which enables occupants to communicate with people outside the
vehicle without lowering the windows.
Thanks to all the upgrades, the S-Class
features BR6 levels of protection and this means the model can withstand
simultaneous detonations of two DM51 grenades as well as assaults from attackers
using 7.62 mm ammunition. While the lifesaving measures take center stage,
INKAS noted the modifications haven’t impacted the S-Class’ various comfort and
safety features. Another thing that’s unchanged is the car’s twin-turbo
4.0-liter V8 that develops 496 hp and 699 Nm of
torque. It’s connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel
drive system, but there’s little doubt the armoring has negatively impacted the
standard model’s 0-96 km/h time of 4.4 seconds.
The armored S-Class is available worldwide
and can be shipped to all major seaports or flown airfreight upon special
request.
