Chinese carmaker Roewe, which is a part of SAIC Group, has ushered in the next generation of its RX5 SUV, making it even larger than the current-gen RX5 Plus. The current off-roader is 4,571 mm long, 1,855 mm wide and 1,719 mm tall and has 2,708 mm of wheelbase. Its newly introduced successor has 4,655 x 1,890 x 1,655 x 2,765 mm in the corresponding dimensions. This makes it even larger than the stretched Hyundai Tucson (4,630 x 1,865 x 1,665 x 2,755 mm).
It is possible that Roewe may continue to
sell both the new RX5 and the old RX5 Plus side-by-side, because the latter
just received its facelift in 2021. While the manufacturer does not say so
explicitly, the larger body dimensions imply that a new platform is being used
for production. Elsewhere, the off-roader has a giant radiator grille and rugged
black overlays on its lower body and wheel arches to protect the paint from
dents and scratches.
The door handles are of a pull-out type,
the mirrors look unusually bulky, and there is a wavy spoiler in the back.
There is only one interior image so far, and a low-quality one at that. You can
just about discern an infotainment display rotated slightly to face the driver
and a rather gently sloped center console with a drive mode selector and HVAC
buttons.
Power for the SUV comes from a 1.5-liter
turbo engine rated at 187 PS, which is obtainable with a
seven-speed DCT or eight-speed A/T. Both drive the front axle with no further
options.
