The facelifted VW Teramont X has surfaced in China revealing the mid-size SUV’s mildly updated styling. If it looks familiar, that’s because the Teramont X is the Chinese market version of the Atlas Cross Sport, and a five-seater sportier-looking variant of the Teramont / Atlas. The crossover-coupe was introduced in 2019, three years after the debut of the regular Teramont. The facelifted Teramont appeared in 2021 visually differentiating itself from the also-facelifted VW Atlas, in terms of front end and rear end designs. Predictably, the same updates are now being transferred to the sportier-roofline model for a coherent family look.

The restyle is focused on the front end that gets a bar splitting the headlights which merge with the updated grille, plus a slightly different bumper. Note that the pictured trim is the R Line, first introduced in the Teramont X range in 2021, with sportier intakes surrounded by black accents. The profile remains unchanged and identical to its US-spec Atlas Cross Sport twin. At the back, we have new LED graphics for the taillights that are now connected by a glossy black panel, and better aligned with the decorative chrome strip underneath. This style was previewed by the VW Lamando sedan and it will likely expand to other models from VW’s range in China. Again, the R-Line bumper is sportier than the base model with a glossy-black area including fake chrome quad exhaust pipes that are fully blocked, and a full-width reflector.

 

According to the official documents from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the Teramont X measures 4,917 mm long, 1,989 mm wide, and 1,729 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,980 mm. Naturally, those figures are identical to the outgoing model.

Under the bonnet of the pictured 380 TSI variant, there is the usual turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 217 hp and 350 Nm of torque just like its predecessor. Power is sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox and VW’s 4Motion AWD system. The outgoing Teramont X was also available in the lesser 330 TSI variant with the 2.0 TSI producing 183 hp, and on the flagship 530 V6, with a 2.5 VR6 producing 295 hp which will likely be carried over to the facelifted range.

The official debut of the updated Teramont X will take place later this year, joining Volkswagen’s SUV range in China.
