Ford confirmed that the new generation of the Tourneo Custom will debut on May 9, starting with the fully-electric variant. The model which appeared in a video teaser will be one out of the five electric LCVs wearing the Ford badge by 2024, and a sibling to the next-gen VW Transporter.
With its first electric LCV, the large
E-Transit, already in production, Ford Pro is gearing up for expanding its
zero-emission range. Last month, the automaker confirmed four upcoming electric
LCV debuts including the Transit / Tourneo Courier and the Transit / Tourneo
Custom duos. The latter will be the first to debut this May, revealing its LED
headlight and taillight graphics in the shadowy teaser. This is coming only a
few weeks after spy photographers caught a camouflaged prototype of the
Tourneo Custom testing in Southern Europe.
While the Transit Custom (van) and Tourneo
Custom (passenger van) are traditionally twin models sharing the same
underpinnings and body panels (besides the blocked rear side windows), in the
new generation they will be further differentiated by a slightly different
lighting signature alongside an illuminated grille. The electric variants will
also have a special badge on the front bumper.
The model replaces the current generation
that debuted in 2012, and received a subtle facelift in 2017. Besides the fully
electric variants, the 1-tonne LCVs are also expected to come with petrol,
diesel, mild-hybrid, and plug-in hybrid powertrains. As part of the
collaboration between Ford and Volkswagen, the Transit/Tourneo Custom will
serve as a base for the next VW Transporter. Something similar will also happen
with the Ford Ranger and VW Amarok pickup trucks, following the already
available VW Caddy and Ford Transit/Tourneo Connect twins.
Ford has confirmed that the new
Transit/Tourneo Custom will be built in Turkey starting from 2023, while the
smaller Transit/Tourneo Courier will follow in 2024. The zero-emission LCVs
will help the automaker achieve its goal of carbon neutrality in Europe by 2035
in terms of its model range, facilities, logistics and suppliers.
