The Toyota 4Runner is an old-school body-on-frame SUV and the company is leaning into that with a retro-inspired 40th Anniversary Edition. Based on the 4Runner SR5 Premium, the special edition has a White, Midnight Black Metallic or Barcelona Red Metallic exterior that contrasts with bronze 17-inch alloy wheels. They’re joined by special badging and a body-color heritage grille with “TOYOTA” lettering.
However, the coolest detail is the
heritage graphics package which features a yellow, orange, and red line that
follows the SUV’s shoulder line before shooting up the C-pillar. The same
accent can also be found on the grille and tailgate badge.
Moving inside, there’s black
SofTex seats with bronze contrast stitching and 40th Anniversary badging on the
headrests. Designers also installed a dashboard plaque, special floor mats, and
a standard power moonroof. Production will be limited to 4,040 units and each
will be powered by a 4.0-liter V6 developing 270 hp and 376 Nm of torque. This engine is connected to a five-speed automatic
transmission and a standard four-wheel drive system.
Putting the 40th Anniversary Edition
aside, the 2023 Toyota 4Runner largely carries over. However, it’s a bit safer
than before as all trims now come equipped with a blind spot monitor and rear
cross traffic alert. Customers who upgrade to the off-road focused 4Runner TRD
Pro will also find a revised color palette that now includes Solar Octane as well
as staples such as Black, White, and Magnetic Gray Metallic.
