Development of the fully electric Chevrolet Blazer continues, following the official teaser in and earlier spy shots of camouflaged prototypes. This time, spy photographers caught a pair of test cars on public roads alongside the current ICE-powered Chevrolet Blazer, and a VW ID.4 which was there for benchmarking purposes. Chevrolet has officially confirmed a performance-focused Blazer SS but the camouflaged prototypes appear to be the more basic versions of the electric SUV. The test cars are wearing what looks like the final production body, characterized by its curved lines, aerodynamic windshield, triangular bumper intakes, the fancy charging port on the front fenders, a strong C-pillar, and sculpted tailgate.
However, the production light units and
turn signals are not fitted yet, with temporary units fitted instead. Also, the
plastic cladding on the wheel arches is missing, showing there is still work to
be done. Both prototypes were fitted with 21-inch wheels shod in Bridgestone
Alenza tires.
This was also the first time we got a peek at the interior of the Blazer EV. The dashboard is mostly covered but we can see a digital cockpit with overlapping displays and a circular volume knob that looks very similar to the one on the Silverado EV. The high-end trims of the latter feature an 11-inch digital instrument cluster combined with a 17-inch infotainment touchscreen, and we wouldn’t be surprised if the same setup was used in the Blazer EV.
There is no information on the technical
specifications of the Blazer EV, but we expect it to use GM’s Ultium platform,
as with the more premium Cadillac Lyric. This means it could use the same 100 kWh
battery offering more than 483 km of range, and the rear-mounted
electric motor, which in the Cadilac is producing 340 hp.
Besides the popular VW ID.4, rivals of the Chevrolet Blazer EV will include the
Tesla Model Y, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the Kia EV6, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
The debut of the Chevrolet Blazer EV is expected later this year, with a
confirmed market launch for Spring 2023.
