If it’s a day that ends in “y,” you can be assured that Porsche is working on a new version of the 911. While we say that in jest, the company currently offers 23 versions of the sports car and that’s not even counting racing variants or certain special editions. With numbers like that, you’d expect the automaker to have their hands full. However, that isn’t stopping them from developing a new variant known as the ST. Based on the 911 GT3 Touring, the car is expected to be a heritage-inspired model that pays tribute to the original from the 1970’s.
While the car doesn’t look too remarkable
at first glance, a closer inspection reveals a double bubble roof and front
fender vents similar to those found on the upcoming 911 GT3 RS. The changes
continue out back as we can see a new spoiler and a revised engine cover, which
incorporates a third brake light as well as a spot for a circular Porsche
Heritage logo.
Spy photographers haven’t gotten a look
inside, but previous heritage editions have been equipped with retro-inspired
digital gauges, classic Porsche crests, and unique upholstery. As a result, we
wouldn’t be surprised if the upcoming 911 ST also incorporates some old school
interior touches.
The biggest mystery is the powertrain, but
the standard 911 GT3 Touring has a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter six-cylinder
engine developing 502 hp and 469 Nm of torque. It
enables the model to accelerate from 0-96 km/h in as little as 3.2
seconds when equipped with the optional PDK transmission. While its possible
that the engine could carryover, previous reports have suggested the ST could
receive a performance boost. Nothing is official, but rumors have suggested an
extra 50 hp is possible.
