Volkswagen’s electric vehicle push has already spawned a crossover and a van, but their latest offering is clearly aimed at the car crowd. Tentatively dubbed the Aero B, the model was previewed by the ID. Vizzion and ID. Vizzion Space concepts. The latter’s influence is immediately apparent as the production model has a similar shoulder line and front end. While the front is partially disguised by stickers, we can see slender headlights, a mesh lower intake, and vertical air curtains. Elsewhere, there are pronounced fenders, aerodynamic side skirts, and a gently sloping roofline. They’re joined by flush-mounted door handles, a pronounced rear spoiler, and a sizable trunk.
The automaker hasn’t said much about the
model but, in 2020, Volkswagen Passenger Cars CEO Ralf Brandstätter confirmed
production would begin at their Emden plant in 2023. At the time, he described
it as a “new, powerful electric model that will attract a lot of attention
around the world.”
Specifications remain a secret, but the
ID. Vizzion Space concept featured an 82 kWh battery pack and a rear-mounted
electric motor developing 275 hp and 550 Nm of
torque. This setup gave the model a range of up to 590 kilometers in the WLTP
cycle and 300 miles in the EPA cycle.
When the concept was introduced, the
company also mentioned an all-wheel drive variant with a front-mounted electric
motor developing 101 hp and 150 Nm of torque. This
would give the model a combined output of 335 hp and a 0-96 km/h time of five seconds flat. Of course, the production model
could adopt a tamer powertrain that is shared with the ID.4. Its rear-wheel
drive variant has 201 hp, while the all-wheel drive model
develops 295 hp.
