MG unveiled the facelifted version of the MG5 EV estate, adopting the same design changes seen on the updated Rowe Ei5 from China. The fully electric wagon will debut at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed with a new face and more equipment. The MG5 EV estate arrived in the UK market in 2020 as a rebadged version of the Chinese Roewe Ei5. The latter received a comprehensive facelift in 2021, which is now carried over in its UK sibling, making it significantly more modern both in terms of exterior and interior design.
The most dramatic change takes place at
the front end. Gone is the chrome grille and instead a new pair of slimmer LED
headlights are interconnected with a thin plastic trim. The charging port is
still located in the middle, and the MG badge has been relocated to the hood.
The bumper is more sculpted than before with triangular-shaped intakes and
aerodynamic lines. The profile hasn’t changed, but a new set of alloy wheels
keep it fresh. Finally, changes at the back are less visible with new graphics
for the LED taillights, a simpler chrome trim between them, and a redesigned
bumper with smaller inlets.
Inside, the MG5 EV gains a redesigned
dashboard which we can’t see yet since the automaker only released a photo of
the seats. The highlight is a new free-standing 10.25-inch infotainment
touchscreen (up from 8-inches) with upgraded software that supports MG’s iSMART
connected car services. The facelifted MG5 EV also benefits from the
Vehicle-To-Load (V2L) technology, allowing users to charge e-bikes, portable
heaters, and camping equipment using the power from the car’s battery.
Technical details on the facelifted MG5
are not yet released. The current MG5 EV uses a 154 hp electric motor and a 52.2 kWh lithium-ion battery allowing a WLTP range of 344 km between charges. However, the facelifted Rowe Ei5 is using a
more powerful electric motor producing 181 hp which could be
used in the updated MG5 EV.
Pricing for the updated MG5 EV will be
announced at a later date together with expected delivery dates, but we don’t
expect big differences from the outgoing model which starts from £ 29,695
(US$ 36,359). Since its UK debut in 2020, the MG5 EV has sold more than 8,000
units, benefiting from the fact it is the only EV estate offered in this
segment.
