Volkswagen has released an intriguing new teaser of its forthcoming electric sedan, set to be previewed through a concept dubbed the ID. AERO. The vehicle will compete in the high-volume upper-middle class segment and be officially unveiled on June 27. It will spawn a production model that will first launch in China in the second half of 2023. A production model will also be unveiled for the North American and European markets in 2023. Underpinning the vehicle is the automaker’s MEB platform and its exterior design takes influence from other VW ID models, including the ID.4 and ID. Buzz.
This teaser images shows that the sleek
sedan concept will be presented with a complex LED taillight array
incorporating a full-width light bar. We can also see that the ID. AERO has a
large glass canopy complemented by silver pillars. Given that it is a concept,
VW has been able to design it without any door handles. It has also been
previewed with a set of large silver and black wheels very similar to those worn
by recent prototypes.
Volkswagen says that the ID. AERO concept
is five meters long. The release of this teaser comes three months after a
sketch of the car’s front fascia was released by the automaker. That teaser
showcased a full-width LED light bar, aggressive air intakes, and a sculpted
bumper. Technical specifications about the concept have not yet been released.
However, given that it will use VW’s MEB platform, previous reports have
indicated it will have an 84 kWh battery pack that should give the sedan a
range of up to 700 km on the WLTP test cycle. It is likely that the
production model will be offered in rear- and all-wheel drive configurations
and use the same electric motors as other ID models.
A number of prototypes spied on the move
in recent months have revealed that the production model will have a more
traditional design than the concept. A Shooting Brake variant of the EV is also
expected.
