Great Wall Motors hopes to cash in on continued demand for pickup trucks with the launch of its new Shanhai Cannon, unveiled at this week’s Chengdu Auto Show in China. The automaker will offer the Shanhai Cannon with three different powertrain options. These will include a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol hybrid, a 2.4-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder, and a 3.0-liter turbocharged petrol V6. Horsepower and torque figures for the 2.0-liter hybrid and 2.4-liter turbo-diesel are not yet known but we do know that the 3.0-liter V6 produces 348 hp and 500 Nm of torque while mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.
While it has not yet been confirmed, data
from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) states
that the 2.4-liter turbodiesel delivers 183 hp. Specifications about the
Shanhai Cannon reveal that it is 5,440 mm long, 1,991 mm wide, and 1,924 mm tall, complete with a massive 3,350 mm wheelbase. It also features a large bed that is 1,500 mm long, 1,520 mm wide, and 500 mm deep and
comes complete with no less than 18 tie-down points.
From a visual standpoint, the Shanhai
Cannon takes some inspiration from the Tank 500 SUV. This is particularly
evident from the front end where there are a set of very similar headlights and
a massive grille with a chrome finish. The pickup also features a bulging front
bumper and sports flared front and rear wheel arches. The rear is relatively
simple, although the tailgate is unusual as it can fold down like a normal
truck or can split in two and open up that way.
Great Wall describes the Shanhai Cannon as
its most luxurious pickup truck and as such, the interior is quite plush. Among
the key features are a large touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster, plenty
of wood grain accents, a two-tone blue and white leather finish, and even
second-row seats that offer electric adjustment. Pricing and availability details
for the Great Wall Shanhai Cannon haven’t been announced.
