Lotus is in the midst of a dramatic transformation rarely seen in the automotive industry, transitioning from a manufacturer of lightweight sports cars into one that produces luxurious, high-performing electric vehicles. Spied testing in China for the first time earlier this month, what you’re looking at is the brand’s first all-electric sedan, currently known as the Envya and the Type 133. It will follow in the footsteps of the Lotus Eletre SUV and while these two prototypes are clad in camouflage and black materials, the sleek shape of the Type 133 immediately catches the eye.
The new Lotus could almost be described as
a sedan coupe given how sleek it is. Visible at the front end is a bumper that
appears somewhat similar in shape to the bumper of the Eletre, giving the sedan
an imposing and dynamic stance. Cast your eyes along the sides of the prototype
and you will see retractable door handles and a sloping roof line. A large set
of brakes are also visible.
It is a little more difficult to make out
some of the small design details found at the rear of the prototype given the
camouflage and the temporary taillights used. However, we think it is safe to
assume that it will feature an LED light bar much like the Eletre.
Car News China reports that the Type 133
will be underpinned by the same Electric Premium Architecture (EPA) as the
Eletre SUV and as such, should be offered with the same powertrains. The
entry-level Eletre and Eletre S models are equipped with a dual-motor
powertrain delivering 595 hp and 710 Nm of torque while the
flagship Eletre R is good for 893 hp and 985 Nm of torque.
Lotus is expected to take the covers off
the new electric sedan in 2023.
