There’s no shortage of Land Rover Defender competitors, but Munro Vehicles has announced plans to introduce the MK_1 on December 5th. Billed as the “world’s most capable all-electric 4×4,” the model promises to appeal to off-road enthusiasts as well as the construction, agriculture, mining, and forestry industries. The company will release full details next month, but “proposed specifications” include an 80.1 kWh battery pack and a permanent four-wheel drive system with 376 hp and 700 Nm of torque. This setup is slated to give the SUV approximately 270 km of range in mixed use.
While that’s not very far, the model is
slated to have a 100 kW DC fast charging capability that can take the battery
from a 15% to 80% charge in around 36 minutes. At home, a Level 2 charger can
take the battery from a 15% to 100% charge in around three hours. Since the
five-seater has off-road intentions, it has body-on-frame construction, a
two-speed transfer case with a locking center differential, and solid axles.
The model also promises to have approach and departure angles of 88 degrees and
70 degrees, respectively. Customers can also expect a 1,000 kg payload and 3,500 kg towing capacity.
While a number of questions remain, the
model has been “cleverly engineered to be simple and low-cost to maintain, with
the extensive use of existing components.” The MK_1 is slated to go into
limited production next year, before the company moves to a site outside
Glasgow in 2024. The move should enable them to ramp up production to 250 units
annually, but they want to expand that number to 2,500 units annually by 2027.
