Russian automaker Aurus has launched the production of its new SUV, the Komendant, at a factory in Yelabuga. The company said it was an ‘unprecedented start’, referring to the fact that not even a year and a half had passed since the launch of its first car – the Senat sedan. We are told that 70 percent of the production is localized in the country, largely thanks to the presence of domestic material and part vendors. The engine and transmission, the electronics and other key components, as well as some of the interior elements, are all said to be made in Russia.
The Komendant debuted in its production
form on September 29, 2022. It is based on the same platform as the
Senat and uses the same powertrain capable of 598 PS. It is
shorter than its luxury sedan predecessor and has a smaller wheelbase for
better maneuverability. Sprinting from zero to 100 km/h takes 6.5
seconds, half a second longer than the Senat can do.
During the presentation event, the company
revealed that it was going to assemble a small pilot batch of SUVs until the
end of 2022, proceeding with the large-scale production start next year. Prices
start from a cool 33.7 million Rubles (555,000 USD), and there is no
information regarding the planned production volumes.
It looks like Aurus intends to focus on
making these two cars on its Yelabuga plant for the time being, with no other
models in the plans. The Arsenal minivan it revealed earlier will not reach the
assembly lines.
