Nissan unveiled the livery of its new Gen3 single-seater that will compete in FIA’s Formula E Championship. The company opted for a red and white theme that in combination with the Shell sponsor logo looks similar to the iconic Ferrari colors in Formula 1. The new “cherry blossom pattern” however is a unique touch honoring Nissan’s Japanese origin.

The cherry blossom is a common sight in the Japanese countryside. Blossoming of the cherry trees starts in February, signaling the coming of spring. For Nissan, the pink flowers on a white background symbolize the new beginnings for Formula E in the wake of the Gen3 era. The new single-seater is called Nissan e-4ORCE 04, promoting the all-wheel-drive powertrain of production EVs like the Nissan Ariya. The company didn’t announce specs, but the Gen3 racers will produce up to 469 hp, featuring a significantly stronger energy regeneration system while weighing less than their predecessors.

This year, the team also announced a new lineup including French driver Norman Nato in the #17 car, and French-Argentine driver Sacha Fenestraz in the #23 car. Both will get a chance to try the Gen3 Formula E during pre-season testing at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia on December 13-16. Season 9 will have 17 races on the calendar, more than any previous Formula E season.

Besides Shell which continues its partnership with Nissan providing E-fluids and charging stations, the Woolmark Company joins as a technical partner. The new sponsor developed the new Nissan Formula E Team uniform made of Merino wool. Nissan joined the Formula E championship in Season 5 (2018/2019) and in April 2022 it acquired the e.dams race team taking full ownership of its Formula E involvement. The Japanese automaker has confirmed its commitment to the Gen3 era of electric single-seaters from season 9 (2022/2023) to the end of season 12 (2025/2026). Throughout this period, Nissan will also supply electric powertrains to McLaren Racing.
