Infiniti announced today that American Q50 buyers will be given another very special color choice in 2023. The Black Opal Metallic paint color will be offered exclusively on the Q50 Red Sport 400 trim and will be as rare as the gemstone it’s named after. Although Infiniti doesn’t say exactly how many cars it will paint in the new color, it does say that it is an ode to “Midnight Purple,” a hue made famous by the Nissan Skyline GT-R. The paint color was one of the rarest available, and now commands a premium over models painted in other colors.
Thanks to a shimmering iridescence, the
Black Opal Metallic paint color shifts between blue, green, purple, and, of
course, black, depending on where the viewer is standing, and what portion of
the paint the light is catching. In addition to paint color, the Q50 Black Opal
Edition will get satin black exterior logos and badges, to ensure nothing
distracts from the special paint color. Hinting at the car’s performance bona
fides, meanwhile, the trunk lid will be graced by an exposed carbon fiber
spoiler.
As with all 2023 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport
400s, power will come from a 3.0-liter VR-series twin-turbocharged
V6 engine that produces 400 hp and 475 Nm of
torque. To reel all that power in, the model gets uprated brakes with
four-piston calipers at the front and two-piston calipers at the back. A
Dynamic Digital Suspension, meanwhile, helps keep everything under control when
the going gets twisty.
Prices for the 2023 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport
400 start at US$ 56,500, and the model is available with either rear- or all-wheel
drive. The Black Opal Edition package adds another US$ 2,200 to the total, and the
automaker says it will start reaching showroom floors soon.
