High-performance wagons have developed a cult-like following for good reason. However, BMW has been content to watch Audi and Mercedes-AMG have all the mid-size fun. That’s about to change as the company is gearing up to launch an all-new M5 Touring, which will be their first in nearly two decades. It will likely sell in tiny numbers, but that’s not the point as the high-performance wagon is a love letter to enthusiasts. Dressed in heavy camouflage, the car will follow in the footsteps of the sedan and have an aggressive front bumper with angular accents. They’ll be joined by a wide grille, vertical air curtains, and familiar headlights.

Moving down the sides, we can see muscular skirts and what appears to be a reduced ride height courtesy of a sport-tuned suspension. The model also has streamlined bodywork, an angular shoulder line, and flush-mounted door handles. They’re joined by a long, sloping roof and stylish wheels that are wrapped in high-performance rubber. Those pulling up from behind will know the M5 Touring means business thanks to a four-tailpipe exhaust system and a split rear spoiler. We can also see an angular rear window and slim taillights.

 

Spy photographers didn’t get a look inside, but we can expect a Curved Display that consists of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment system. They should be joined by a flat-bottom steering wheel and a minimalist center console.

BMW hasn’t been shy about electrifying the M5 and the model is expected to be heavily influenced by the XM and XM Label Red. The latter sports a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, a 29.5 kWh battery pack, and an electric motor that is integrated into an eight-speed automatic transmission. This setup allows for a combined output of 738 hp and 1,000 Nm of torque, although rumors have suggested the M5 could have a smaller battery and up to 789 hp.

Regardless of the final numbers, BMW has already confirmed the M5 Touring will arrive in 2024 and have the “perfect symbiosis of M-typical performance, uncompromising long-distance comfort and impressive spaciousness.”
