This is our first look at the production-spec BYD Song L that was showcased earlier this year as a concept meant to take on the likes of the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5. These images of a bright blue, camouflaged BYD Song L prototype were published by the car manufacturer itself after it conducted high-temperature tests of it in China’s Xinjiang region. While it retains the same overall shape of the concept, BYD has clearly made some alterations to the exterior design.
Kicking off these changes appears to be
slightly simpler headlights with LED daytime running lights at the top. The
front bumper is also completely different and while it retains a small central
grille like the concept, it does not have the large air intakes on either side.
The side profile is largely the same as the concept and despite the camouflage,
we can see that the angular creases of the show car have been maintained.
However, the small vents behind the front wheels have been removed and the
cameras have been replaced with traditional side mirrors.
BYD’s designers have also worked to refine
and simplify the car’s rear end. Like the concept, it has LED taillights with
intricate red graphics but it does not have a pronounced diffuser. A key
element that has carried through from the concept to the production model is
the spoiler stretching out from the roof.
Underpinning the BYD Song L is the
company’s e-platform 3.0 used by some of its other models, including the Seal.
This platform supports single- and dual-motor configurations and we expect the
Song L to be offered with both. We also know the electric architecture supports
BYD’s Blade 800-volt battery and that the Song L will land with the company’s
DiSus-A air suspension system.
Car News China says the car could
celebrate its global debut at the Chengdu Auto Show in late August.
