A week after a series of computer-generated images of the new Deepal G318 SUV surfaced online, the first real-life photos have emerged thanks to Chinese regulators. We now also have all the juicy details and specifications. The G318 is the third model from the Deepal brand, owned by Changan, and gets its name from Highway 318 on the China/Nepal border. It has been conceived as a boxy, rugged SUV measuring 4,915 mm in length, 1,985 mm wide, 1,885 mm tall, and sitting on a 2,880 mm wheelbase.
Given that it is an EV, it features a
rather unconventional front-end without a main front grille but does sport a
large intake lower down on the front bumper. These images also show it sports
LED headlights and has black body cladding, much like many other rugged SUVs on
the market. Among the elements finished in black include the flared wheel
arches, rocker panels, and the wing mirrors, while visible at the rear is a
spare wheel carrier and thin LED taillights running vertically.
These images also show that the rear
bumper has been blacked out and there is a place for a towbar. Additionally,
the spare wheel carrier can be ditched in favor of a small storage box while
Deepal can also equip the SUV with roof rails supporting four prominent
forward-facing driving lights. No photos of the SUV’s interior have been
released. The G318 is technically a range-extended EV as it features a
1.5-liter petrol engine with 110 kW (147 hp) that serves as a generator but
does not power the wheels. The entry-level pairs this engine to a single
electric motor at the rear wheels with 185 kW (248 hp) while the flagship model
pairs the 1.5-liter engine with two electric motors making a combined 316 kW
(424 hp).
Details about the vehicle’s battery pack
have not been confirmed but it is believed to sport a lithium-ion phosphate
pack from CALB that will be offered in 18.4 kWh and 35.1 kWh capacities. The
G318 can tow up to 1,600 kg. Local sales have not yet began in
China but when they do, prices are expected to start at around 300,000 yuan or US$ 42,000.
