VW ID.UNYX, is the sister car to the Cupra Tavascan, sharing much of its exterior design with its sibling. The new ID.UNYX will be manufactured by Volkswagen Anhui, the German automaker’s joint venture partnership with Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group. VW owns a 75% stake in the partnership and will build the UNYX at the same plant as the Tavascan. However, whereas the Cupra will be sold in international markets, the VW version will be sold exclusively in China.
Underpinning the sleek crossover is the VW
Group’s MEB platform and while it has a similar overall shape to the Tavascan,
it does adopt some unique touches. For example, the front end has been
completely changed and now includes new headlights, an LED light bar, and
revised gloss black elements and air intakes. VW’s designers have also crafted
a unique set of wheels for the crossover that adds to its sporty looks.
Like the Cupra, the rear end of the
ID.UNYX is very striking. There is an LED light bar, an illuminated VW badge,
and sleek taillights. These photos from China’s Ministry of Industry and
Information Technology also show an ID.UNYX with gold badges, although it is
unclear if all models will have these gold elements. A gloss-black rear bumper
also stands out.
Two versions of the crossover will be
produced. The entry-level model will have a 228 hp electric motor at
the rear wheels while the flagship version will use a dual-motor system with a
228 hp rear motor and a 107 hp front motor, combining to
produce 335 hp. Both models will be able to hit 160 km/h flat
out. A launch date for the new model has not yet been announced but it could be
unveiled at April’s Beijing Auto Show.
