Here it is, the 2025 Toyota GR Corolla. The most significant update is the inclusion of an 8-speed automatic transmission, a move that should help broaden the appeal of the potent hot hatch. The eight-speed, known as the Gazoo Racing Direct Automatic Transmission (DAT), is the same one that was added to the GR Yaris range earlier this year. A key difference between this gearbox and those found in the GR Supra and GR 86 is that rather than basing shifts on deceleration g-force and speed, the DAT senses brake and accelerator inputs to make the perfect change.
Interestingly, the transmission has very
similar ratios to the standard six-speed manual and has its own dedicated cooler.
Toyota will also offer a sub-radiator for additional cooling as an option on
Premium models and standard equipment on Premium Plus versions. Other upgrades
have been made to boost performance. The most obvious is an increase of torque
from 273 lb-ft to 295 lb-ft (400 Nm), while the same 300 hp has been retained
from the highly-strung 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder. A Launch Control
system is also standard on DAT models, although Toyota hasn’t said how quickly
it can hit 96 km/h.
Toyota’s engineers have improved the
handling of the hatch, too. New rebound springs have been added to the front
and rear suspension to reduce inner wheel lift, while optimizations have been
made to the rear coils and stabilizers. The trailing arm mounting point has
also been moved to reduce squat under acceleration. Front and rear Torsen
limited-slip differentials (LSD) will be standard on all 2025 models. Some
moderate visual changes have also been made, including a redesigned front
bumper that improves cooling. This new fascia incorporates large brake ducts
while air curtains have been added to draw air out from the top of the tire.
The interior is much the same but does get new pieces of trim.
Three versions will be sold in the U.S.:
the GR Corolla Core, GR Corolla Premium, and GR Corolla Premium Plus. Key
features exclusive to the Premium Plus include a forged carbon fiber roof, a
custom hood, sub-radiator, matte black wheels, head-up display, and GR-branded
Suede seats. Pricing details haven’t been announced.
