BYD has unveiled photos of its new fully electric hatchback, the Seal 06 GT. This model is the production version of the BYD Ocean M Concept, which made its debut at the Beijing Motor Show in April 2024. While the exterior remains faithful to the concept’s lines, the aggressive aero that once gave it hot hatch vibes has been dialed back. The production bumpers feature sporty intakes but are noticeably more subdued, and the once-prominent rear wing has mysteriously vanished. The LED graphics on the headlights and taillights have also been toned down, along with the mirrors, making it clear that some of the concept’s flair didn’t survive the trip to the assembly line.

Inside, the hatchback appears to borrow the digital cockpit, steering wheel, and most of the switchgear from the BYD Seal sedan, though it does sport a unique dashboard and climate vent design to keep things fresh. The Seal 06 GT is positioned to bridge the gap between the smaller Dolphin and the slightly larger Seal sedan. At 4,630 mm long with a wheelbase of 2,820 mm, this new BYD has a larger footprint than the VW ID.3 and MG4 hatchbacks, while still coming in just under the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 crossovers.

The Seal 06 GT rides on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 Evo architecture, designed to handle both single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD powertrains. While BYD hasn’t officially revealed the powertrain specs, details from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology suggest outputs of 215 hp for the single motor and 416 hp for the dual motor.

The official debut of the BYD Seal 06 GT is scheduled for August 30, with pricing expected between ¥ 150,000-200,000 (US$ 21,000-US$ 28,000). It’s a safe bet that BYD will be exporting this model to markets beyond China, including Europe and Australia.
