Volkswagen introduced the ID. 2all concept last March and it’s inching closer to production as spy photographers have caught a mule undergoing testing on the Nürburgring. Spied wearing a modified ID.3 body, the mule largely flies under the radar. However, a closer inspection reveals a charging port has been grafted onto the passenger side front fender. That isn’t the only change as the shrunken down rear doors hint at a shorter wheelbase. Needless to say, this is a chassis testing mule for the upcoming model, which will ride on the new MEB Entry platform. As the name suggests, it borrows from the current MEB architecture and is focused on affordability.
Volkswagen has previously said the
production ID.2 is targeted to cost less than € 25,000 (US$ 27,883). When the
concept was introduced last year, the company said the road-going variant would
be introduced in 2025, although reports have suggested the model may be
delayed. While nothing is official, we’re just beginning to see mules, so that
seems like a strong possibility.
Regardless of when the ID.2 arrives,
Volkswagen has already confirmed it will be front-wheel drive and have
“particularly efficient drive, battery and charging technology.” The company
has been coy on specifics, but the concept had a 223 hp electric motor and a WLTP range of up to 450 km.
The ID.2 is slated to be accompanied by a
compact electric crossover. The company said it will arrive in 2026 and a
teaser suggested it will look like a rugged hatchback.
